Treat this as a starting framework, not a fixed schedule. Pick one main commitment each day and leave space around it. Your arrival time, mobility, interests and ticket availability should shape the final plan.

Keep your arrival day light. Check in, find a nearby café and take a short neighbourhood walk. Save a timed attraction for a day when a delayed flight cannot derail it.

Give ancient Rome a proper day.

Make the Colosseum and Roman Forum the focus, with a long lunch and an unhurried evening. Choose the admission or guided-tour format that suits you before filling the rest of the day.

Follow your appetite.

Choose Trastevere or Testaccio for a food-focused outing. A guided tasting can introduce unfamiliar dishes; independent exploring gives you more freedom to stop when something catches your eye.

Leave room for your version of Rome.

Choose a museum, a neighbourhood you have not explored or a slower day of cafés and squares. If the Vatican Museums are a priority, give them a dedicated block instead of squeezing them into your ancient-Rome day.

One last coffee. Then the journey home.

Consider Trastevere for evenings around trattorias and lively streets. If quiet sleep matters, look carefully at the street and recent room reviews.

Is four nights enough for Rome?

Four nights is our suggested starting point for a first trip with three full sightseeing days. It leaves room for ancient Rome, a food-focused outing and a day shaped by your interests. Add nights if you prefer a slower pace or more museums.

Should I book every day in advance?

Prioritise the attractions and experiences you would be disappointed to miss. Keep some unscheduled time, and avoid stacking timed bookings so closely that a delay becomes stressful.

Can I change the dates, budget or travel style?
